figuring out how to stay shiny

hate-wizard asked: So, I did note at the start of the post that I am an organ donor, and I have no intention to change that. On the other hand, I posted (what I thought was, and no one has suggested otherwise) an ethical dilemna that I have been struggling with. I agree it is a slippery slope, but on the other hand we restrict the rights of those who murder humans (by imprisoning them), so why should we not do the same to those who murder animals?

Legally, we’d be asking for personhood for non-human animals. The legal system values human life more than non-human life, so to bring in the restriction of rights in a legal sense would be to run into a wall of legal speciesism, which stops the conversation unless we break off into a tangent on why animal rights are only lightly touched by legal protections.

To place non-human animals and humans on equal footing when concerning ethics would be to disregard the material reality. I think material reality affects a lot of folks’ moral standing (not 24/7, obvs) but enough to close minds to non-human animal personhood.

I’d never suggest putting someone in prison for eating an animal-based diet. I’ve started identifying myself as a non-ethical vegan because I haven’t yet figured out where I stand, and to what degree I could fiercely advocate for animal rights. I appreciate folks who do, but unfortunately in the process they reveal themselves to be racist, sexist fucks. No amount of animals saved could make those things okay….and that was a tangent haha my bad.
