I’m an organ donor. I also am somewhere in between vegan and vegetarian. I see a contradiction in this.

This means that if I die, any of my usable organs will be harvested and transplanted into another human being, if possible. However, the odds of any of the recipients being vegan or vegetarian is very small.  Somewhere around 2% of the Western world’s population is vegan with up to a possible 10% being vegetarian.

Here comes my worry. Something in the region of 300 animals are killed over the life of a single meat-eater (according to this on American meat-eaters, but it may be much higher). So, almost all of my organs are going to extend the life of meat-eaters, which means that even if they live for one year, each of my organs is responsible for the death of multiple animals.

On that basis, both vegans and vegetarians should not be organ donors.

I think to imply that people who eat meat aren’t worth saving, is far more unethical than saving them. Should we restrict the rights of people who eat meat? Should we forcibly sterilize them? Should we sew their mouths shut until they agree to eat a plan based diet? Should we without any kind of aid money from people who eat meat? It’s a slippery slope.

I don’t particularly care about the statistics, nor do I think that aids your point in any way.

If you are vegetarian/vegan for the sole purpose of not killing animals, then sure, in a frenzy of extreme logic and over-zealous, nit-picky, elitist reasoning….this would make sense.

When I die and if my organs are usable, I don’t care who gets them. Hopefully my organs will be strong and healthy from a plant based diet and will serve that person well. I hope my organs save their lives and I hope they live their lives to the fullest. I don’t care if they’re a meat eater, I don’t care if they struggle with eating disorders, I don’t care if they’re terminally ill, I don’t care of they’re diabetic, I don’t care when kind of lifestyle they live or the choices that they make because at that point, it’s not my problem.

When I die, my organs are not mine anymore. I will not live on as some ethical living memory inside someone’s body. That being said, what someone else does with their body, is not my business. What someone else does, who is simply trying to live, is not my business…..ESPECIALLY SINCE I WILL NOT EXIST ANYMORE.
